El Camino’s student government poster making room and the school’s storage room started sinking, along with the roof breaking and caving in last week. Student government had to move all their stuff out on Oct. 16, although this room has shown damage for a while.

Student government had to move into room 57 and turn their classroom, A-8, into the poster-making room. The poster-making room is very important to the class; the students hang posters to advertise any school events coming up.

Shannon Fox, student government advisor, had students come to school on Sunday to help the move into the new classroom, which counted as community service for any students that helped.

Fox talked about how she thinks this will affect the year and her plan to get things back to normal.

“This year has been really hectic and busy for student government in general–so I think that most of student government is currently feeling discouraged about a lot of things, and that might adversely affect the rest of the year,” Fox explained.

Associated Student Body President Katie Sue Amerine (‘27) talked about her thoughts on moving classrooms and what this means for the class.

“I think it won’t affect us a lot. I think it probably will for the next few weeks while we get acclimated to it, but I think overall we will have more space because A-8 has a lot of room–but room 57 is way too small for 40 people,” Amerine mentioned.

Although they had to move out of A-4 on Friday and were told that morning that they had to evacuate that day, there were many signs that the building was deteriorating, such as many water stains on the ceiling, the ceiling tiles starting to break, and the hardwood floor starting to become soft to the touch. Now the floor is sinking to one side, being the catalyst for student government’s move.

“We’ve started noticing it a little bit. The rooms next to it have been close since my sophomore year because they’ve had asbestos. I don’t think we were technically supposed to be in A-4, but they kept letting us be in there and then they told us last week that they were not allowed to be in there anymore,” Amerine added.

Although student government did not plan for this to happen, they have a lot to do to get back on track. They have made the adjustments and are working to restore their original two classrooms. For any information about A-4 or student government talk to Shannon Fox in room 57.
