Today, Junior and Senior students at El Camino met in the cafeteria during second period to learn and practice the process of voting by mail in Sacramento County ahead of California’s General Elections this fall.
Officials from the Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections Office came to EC and held a tutorial in the cafeteria where students learned how to vote and mock-voted for government positions. Though, instead of using the names of real politicians, the candidates were replaced with superhero names. Students filled out their ballots and cast their votes for the county to count. Students will receive the results of their election in the coming weeks.
Vice principal Chris Hauger spoke about what the benefits of this assembly were for students.
“We’re trying to get Juniors and Seniors the knowledge of voting. It’s important for their future–they’re seeing the preemptive of how mail-in ballots are done,” Hauger explained.
Students 16 years old and older are eligible to register to vote, and students 18 and older will be eligible to vote this fall. For more information on Sacramento County’s voting process, visit https://elections.saccounty.gov/us.
