El Camino Football hosted their second home game of the season on Sept. 11. The game resulted in both junior varsity and varsity losing against the Center Cougars. The JV score was 14-15 with the Eagles losing by one point. Varsity lost 0-34 with the majority of points scored in the second quarter. Both teams had their own issues that resulted in the losses.
JV safety and receiver Warren Howe (‘29) shared that JV fought hard till the end as a team but had some hiccups.
“We’re still trying to figure out how to finish a game all the way through, because we had a couple of mistakes at the end that cost us [the game],” Howe explained.
JV is currently 0-3 overall with many more upcoming games to improve in. Varsity struggled in their own ways as Aiden Daffron (‘27), one of the varsity quarterbacks, explained.
“We kept losing a lot of faith in each other. There was a lot of arguing, a lot of people not doing their jobs individually. And I feel like some of the plays that coaches were calling were not the right plays to use in certain situations. I feel like, for us quarterbacks, we also should have taken a little bit more control over the offense,” Daffron stated.
Daffron also shared that he thought varsity began the game a bit slow, which hurt their momentum. Head varsity coach Damaree Morris had the same sentiment.
“We came out extremely flat, and we just couldn’t get it going again,” Morris said.
He also pointed out that another problem during the game was a lack of preparation.
“We also had a tough time at practice. I don’t want to make any excuses, but we couldn’t practice for two days because of the heat. So we went through some challenges,” Morris explained.
Morris stated that practice is a key factor in having good games because they can prepare for the other teams strategies and figure out their own.
Overall, the football team has a lot to work towards in order to claim wins. The next home football games will be EC’s Homecoming game on Oct. 2 versus Dixon, with JV starting at 5:00 p.m. and varsity starting at 7:00 p.m.
