Feature: Addison Ponder leads class of ’24 through the years

With big dreams of law school, a four-year run of high school class presidency is great training ground.

Addison Ponder (‘24), was elected as senior class president for El Camino student government this year, following her history of being class president every year since her freshman year. 

Ponder’s job is to manage all senior events, with a focus on homecoming, fundraisers and Senior Ball. She’s been working on the senior class homecoming float since August, and has managed the production of it to ensure its on-time completion. 

The senior class of students Ponder works with in student government praised her ability to manage floats for four years. ASB President Carolina Carruth (‘24) values the way Ponder’s leadership keeps the senior class together.

“She’s been our president since freshman year,” Carruth said. “We would have fallen apart without her. Her back hurts so bad from carrying floats for years.”

A notable achievement in float building came in Ponder’s junior year, when her class unexpectedly placed first with their float during homecoming in 2022. 

Student government Tech Lead Keegan Oates (‘24) gave Ponder much credit for that accomplishment.

“We wouldn’t have won without her,” he stated.

Aside from just event management, Ponder has also learned a lot about how to guide a class during her time in EC Student Government.

“Every group of people requires a different kind of leader,” Ponder said. “And to be an effective leader, you have to figure out what that group of people needs you to be for them.” 

Regarding Ponder’s goals after high school, she hopes her leadership skills that she has gained during her time as class president will benefit her career ambitions in law.

“I hope to go to law school and become a lawyer, maybe environmental,” Ponder shared. 

Ponder’s efforts in float management this year can be seen during the Homecoming Game this Friday, and more of her direction skills will be shown with Senior Ball coming on May 4th, 2024.
