Yesterday, on Nov. 20, a group of 32 media students traveled to Audacy Radio to visit local radio stations and California State University Sacramento to learn more about the process of working in radio.

Students from El Camino’s media program taught by Matt Sumpter had the opportunity to join the field trip. It was an educational experience for those who are interested in topics such as broadcasting, radio management, and media. Students from all levels of the media program including Intro to Media, Video Production, Broadcasting, and Directed Project attended. In these classes, students learn about film, radio, and the process of working on set.

The media students first toured Audacy Radio; they got the chance to speak to real radio hosts, observe them speak on air, and ask them questions about their career. They explored three different radio stations within the building, KRXQ 98 Rock, KSFM 102.5, and KUDL 106.5, “The Wake Up Call.”

Some of the students got the opportunity to be interviewed on “The Wake Up Call” show by radio hosts Katie and Gavin. While there, students learned from different radio hosts, some being EC alumni, Katie (’00) being one of them. They walked the media students through the process of how it was to become a radio host, and how it is to work in the media and radio field.

Afterwards, students carried on to Sacramento State’s radio station, KSSU where they met some radio students and even got to be involved in the recording process of a radio show there. They circled through three different stations; DJing, shadowing the “Loud Mouth” radio show with DJ Blue Goose, and Q&A with radio students. Many students enjoyed the educational experience of the field trip, and were excited to see people in the work force for something they’re passionate about.
