On Oct. 27, Ryn Marbach (‘26), Ava Dwyer (‘26) and Sarah Edwards (‘26) went to girls golf divisionals at Micke Grove golf links after taking three of the six league individual qualifying spots.

Marbach shot a 117, Edwards shot a 129 and Dwyer shot a 97 to tie for 4th, putting her in the top 12 players that moved on to the SJS Masters Championships.

Golf coach Matt Sumpter described the tournament as competitive with tough conditions, as it had rained over the weekend leading up to the game.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a difficult course, but there is definitely an opportunity to get some penalty strokes,” Sumpter said, commenting later on the higher than normal amount of water hazards around the course.

The coach attributed Dwyer’s success that day mostly to her consistently positive attitude.

“She’s really good at letting things go. And so when she shoots a bad shot, she can–recover fairly quickly,” Sumpter said. “I think she does a pretty good job of not letting it compound.”

Dwyer herself stated that she was able to avoid anxiety by not believing that she was going to do well enough to progress past divisionals. She mentioned that she has a similar mindset going into Masters.

“I’m not moving on from Masters. There’s no way. That was a miracle that I made my PR [at divisionals],” she said, then adding that she is still excited for the event.

Edwards praised Dwyer for being able to make her personal record in the cold and wet conditions, noting how water on both sides of some fairways stumped both herself and Marbach.

“I’m really proud of her, and even if she doesn’t do that well and she doesn’t hit her next PR, I still think it’s so awesome that she made it to Masters,” Edwards said.

Edwards stated that Dwyer appeared nervous at times during practice in the week after divisionals, but that her confidence in Dwyer is unchanged because of it.

Out of the 12 individuals from divisionals to progress to Masters, 10 of them were from the GEL league. The Masters Championships was yesterday at The Reserve At Spanos Park near Stockton, and Dwyer’s results will be available in this Thursday’s sports updates.
