El Camino High School’s theatre program recently held auditions on Sept. 3 and 4 in the Performing Arts Center for their upcoming play, “Seussical: The Musical”.
Every fall, the theatre program showcases an annual musical for students, teachers, and families to enjoy. This gives many students the opportunities to express themselves and find something they are passionate about. The auditions were split up into two different days. The first day, students were given a list of songs from different musicals to memorize and perform. The second day, they had to perform a song from “Seussical: The Musical”. Michael DiSalvo, EC’s theatre teacher, is directing the musical and chose the cast list this year.
“The first day, we gave them a list of very popular musical theatre songs in the hopes they would know one of them already— Then, we brought everybody back on the second day and asked them to prepare 30 to 60 seconds of a song from the actual show,” DiSalvo said.
Many new people to the theatre program auditioned this year that are not part of the class yet. This gives the theatre class, both students and teacher, hope for more students to come join the class and more plays to come. In particular, theatre student Quinn Reynolds (‘26) who was casted as Horton, is excited with the turnout and looks forward to this musical.
“Audtions went really well. We saw a lot of new faces, and it was super great to see a bunch of freshmen show up, and like a lot of just new people,” Reynolds said.
The cast consists of six leads, some smaller roles and the rest being ensemble. The musical’s leads are Sienna Morris (‘27) as The Cat in the Hat, Reynolds as Horton, Genevieve Feldman (‘26) as Jojo, Maggie Brown (‘26) as Mayzie La Bird, and Adelyn Wilson (‘28) as Sour Kangaroo. DiSalvo was glad with the amount of people that showed up for this year’s auditions.
“We had more than we needed for the show, which is always a luxury. The show is about 22 people, we had about 33 so it was good. It was a nice turnout, it was really great,” DiSalvo said.
The theatre team started rehearsals and will start choreography soon with a professional. Look for their musical in Nov. EC Theatre Club has their first meeting today after school in room S-4 if a student is interested in learning more information.
