El Camino’s varsity girls volleyball team won their home game against Destiny Christian Academy last night in four sets.
The Eagles lost the first set 25-20, but won the next three 25-18, 25-23 and 25-17.
Varsity Coach Sarah Vieira noted that the team struggled to perform in the first set, but was able to come back in the second and win the game.
“Volleyball is a game of momentum— Once we came back and won the second set the momentum was in our favor and we just kind of carried it through the next two sets,” Vieira said.
The coach praised Kalli Porter (‘26) for leading the team in kills (essentially points scored).
Porter herself said she was able to help get her teammates out of the mental struggles they faced last night so they could work together to make their comeback.
“As a team we worked really good together, and I think towards the end of it we really kept our energy going,” Porter said.
She added that the team wasn’t serving well until the last set, in which the whole team’s serves improved greatly. Porter pointed out that Lucie Manigart (‘29) specifically was serving very well by that time.
Manigart agreed with Porter’s assessment of the team’s serving, adding how the team also excelled in other areas.
“We did really good with— the hitting and the covering,” Manigart said.
Manigart remarked that the team’s chemistry and ability to come together was much better than expected from a team that has only recently started playing games together.
The volleyball team is currently 2nd in league behind Sutter, whom they will play in a home game at 9/25 at 6:30pm.
The team’s next game is next Tuesday, 6:30pm, at Casa Robles.
