On Aug. 27, El Camino staff hosted Eagle Parents at EC’s biannual Back to School Night. This event is a chance for parents and guardians to visit their child’s classroom to understand the content they will be studying and the campus they will be learning on every day.
Back to School Night is broken down into four ten-minute ‘classes’ for the parents to attend. These classes are separated by five-minute ‘passing periods’ for the parents to find their next class.
During the classes, teachers provided parents with information about the content and structure of the class. AP teachers also spoke about testing in the spring, and possibly the workload of the class. Teachers also spoke about rules and expectations in their classroom.
French teacher David Manigart was disappointed with the turn out this year. He explained that only 20 families for all three of his classes came to learn.
“My main goal is to connect with parents as human beings—it facilitates a relationship with the parent later on,” Manigart stated.
Manigart also believes that a connection from teacher to parent is important for the students’ learning. He stated that parent involvement helps students become more successful.
One thing that Manigart was happy with was student government members helping parents to find their child’s classes and answering questions. The students stood at the hallway entrances, greeting parents and fostering a positive environment on campus.
CaMora Ward (‘27) was in charge of telling student government members where to be and telling them how to interact with parents.
“I gave each person a partner, a location, and told them to hand out maps—and to be respectful and ask if they need help,” Ward said.
Back to School Night happens twice a year at the beginning of each block. Parents are encouraged to visit the campus and become involved in their students’ education. For more information, visit the El Camino website and refer to the calendar.
