El Camino’s football season kicked off last Friday in a home game against Rosemont, where varsity lost 53-0 and junior varsity won 26-14.

Last year the team won no games, but Head Coach Andy Sullivan expects better results this year.

“It’s going to be a tough season, but there has been a lot of growth since last football season already, in [particular] with our JV football team who [has] just won our first game between both programs in the past three years,” Sullivan said.

The coach listed Bret Harte, Natomas and Woodland as teams he expects to do well against during this season. Sullivan also mentioned that a new CIF rule allowing seniors to play on JV teams has influenced their team compositions.

“Right now we have a couple of seniors that agree to play on JV, and then we also have five sophomores that are playing varsity,” Sullivan said.

Due to some injuries sustained during the game, the team is short on players and is looking into bringing more sophomores onto varsity.

While Sullivan said that the team will be working on the offensive side of things and putting up more points, varsity captain Aiden Daffron (‘27) pointed out a lack of teamwork being a problem that the team needs to work on.

“I just think we need to work more as a team and lift each other up,” Daffron said.

Daffron wasn’t the only player who thought teamwork was a problem; varsity captain Solomon Garrett (‘26) thinks that team members need to stop complaining and do their assignments in order for the team to improve. He also touched on the team’s lack of subs and how it tires the players who are constantly on the field.

“The subs issue, we can’t really fix, that’s not really in our power— We just need more people,” Garrett said.

The Eagles hope to see improvement from last Friday’s game when they play 7:30pm tonight in an away game at Center HS.
