To conclude the first full week of the 2025-2026 school year, El Camino’s Student Government held the Back-to-School Rally last Friday, Aug. 22. This rally also preceded this year’s first home football game, which was held at 6pm for junior varsity and 8pm for varsity.

This year’s Masters of Ceremonies were Chance Murdock (‘26) and Jacob Guletz (‘26), both new members of Student Government along with their new advisor Shannon Fox.

The rally featured performances from EC’s choir, band and cheer team, an introduction to the varsity and junior varsity football teams and captains, and many games with student participants.

Rally lead, Jailah Brooks (‘26), gave insight into the planning that made this rally possible.

“I began planning the rally about mid-June—I just started brainstorming ideas; I was thinking about themes, how I want it to look, decorations, games we could play, who could get involved,” Brooks explained.

Since this rally was held in the first full week of school, there was not enough time to hold auditions. Brooks instead worked on outreach into the school community to get people interested in participating.

As for the MCs, Murdock showed his enthusiasm early in the school year about becoming an MC and coordinated with Brooks to make that happen, and Guletz joined soon after.

“We rehearse the whole rally probably 30 minutes before it starts—the MCs are in charge of that,” Murdock said. “Its the MC’s job to say ‘You come in here after I say this’ or ‘You start running in here before I say this.’”

Calista Wold (27), a varsity volleyball player, was asked to participate at the last minute in a game of crab soccer between members of the girls volleyball and girls flag football teams.

“I was the goalie, so I didn’t do much—my friends all said that [the game] was fun,” Wold said.

Other games included a best-dressed challenge with a participant from each grade, a game of sock-tag and EC related trivia.

Brooks hopes to improve on timing in the upcoming rallies by making sure things like game planning and participants are not rushed again. Despite the fact that they had limited time, members of Student Government and participants in the rally were pleased with the outcome.

“We did get a compliment from the principal,” Brooks added. “She said it was one of the most spirited rallies we’ve had so far.”

As planning for the Homecoming rally has already begun, Student Government is hopeful that they will be able to expand on their hard work and make it even better. If you would like to participate in the next rally, either in a game or as an MC, see Fox in room A-8.
