To start off the first full week of the new school year at El Camino, Student Government organized a spirit week to get students more excited for the beginning of the 2025-26 school year.
As for the themes, Monday was Tropical, Tuesday was Jersey, Wednesday was Dress Like a Teacher, Thursday was Career, and Friday was Class Colors. For the last day, Freshmen wore gray, Sophomores wore white, Juniors wore green, and Seniors wore black.
Student government students, Sophie Partin (‘29) and Keon McCray (‘28) were voted on by their class to be the leads of orchestrating the spirit week’s themes.
“Before school started, we were texting about it. We wanted to go with the back to school theme and we brainstormed ideas together,” Partin said.
For most spirit weeks, an event follows it like dances or football games. This Spirit Week, EC had their first home football game to kick off the football season. The student government class hopes these different spirit weeks will get students excited for upcoming events and bring students together.
“There’s a lot of smiles around campus. When people are like ‘Oh, I like your jersey’, you know, just seeing the different jerseys out there and how people interpret it,” Shannon Fox, the Student Government teacher said.
EC had a high participation rate for the first spirit week of the school year which is promising for the other spirit weeks to come. The day with the most students dressed for the theme was jersey day with 351 participants. For the next spirit week, student government is planning on making a point system to get even more people dressing up. The class with the highest number of dressed up students wins. Additionally, teachers will be able to participate too and choose which class their points go to. Students that are dressed up are worth one point while teachers will be worth five points.
“We’re going to do class competition with the most participation, and they will get full size candy bars at the end of the week for whichever class it is that wins,” Fox said.
In the past, there have not been many students that have dressed up for spirit week. Some of the reasons as to why this is a problem is the lack of information or encouragement. Therefore, student government has worked greatly with creating more ways to advertise spirit week. For example, they recently created a new Instagram account to promote the spirit week and other EC events students should forward to. If an EC student is interested, they can check out eagle_experience2025 on Instagram.
“[It has been] mostly posters, and it’s a lot of word of mouth. I’ve heard people ask me or ask their friends, ‘Oh what’s tomorrow for spirit day’,” McCray said.
Spirit weeks can have many benefits for students, which is why student government encourages students to participate. It gives students something to look forward to every day that week.
“Personally for me, it makes me a lot more excited to come to school every day because I get to plan out this really cool outfit,” Partin said.
One of the many EC students that participated for this spirit week was Parker Holzgang (‘26). He dressed up for both the tropical day and class color day. Him and his friends enjoyed seeing different students all dressed up for the different themed days, especially for the tropical day because it was colorful.
“I think spirit weeks can encourage friendships and help bring more people together, and it also helps improve the vibe,” Holzgang said.
Student government is planning out their next spirit weeks to bring even more students together. Students should expect for the next spirit days to be the week of homecoming.
