Sometimes the best lessons in education are when real life happens.
Today during second period, a car swerved and crashed onto the lawn of the house on the corner of Avila Ln. and Eastern Ave. After hearing the accident outside her classroom, Medical Assisting Pathway teacher Erica Carruth exited her classroom’s back door and made her way to the scene.
The accident took place during her class, and students observed from the classroom windows, providing an unplanned learning opportunity. Carruth was called over for help by the driver and she began to take the driver’s pulse and monitor this situation while Emergency Medical Service (EMS) was on their way. Once a fire truck arrived on scene, Carruth returned to her classroom to share with her class the steps she took to monitor the drivers vitals in an emergency situation.
One MAP student Cokai Ahmadzai (’25) stated that Carruth said to the class, “do not practice out of your scope, just monitor them and wait for medical professionals.”
Carruth has been a teacher at EC for two years.
