For decades, high schools and junior high schools in the United States have had an organized group of students that are given the responsibility of representing the Associated Student Body’s wants and requests, called Student Government. This student-led program plans and produces events for their school, along with promoting school spirit.

For the past four years Chemistry Teacher Sara Turner has been an advisor of student government but starting next school year her role will be passed to Shannon Fox who currently teaches Creative Writing in room 32.

Turner reflected on her years as student government advisor, saying she enjoyed it despite the difficulties the position posed.

“You have more scrutiny from the outside, because it’s a public-facing position, but you have less control over what happens in the classroom because it’s a student-run class,” Turner explained.

Throughout those four years, Turner worked on transitioning student government from the once extremely competitive environment to a more friendly-competition. She hopes that going forward, the new advisor will continue to support this kind of environment. She would also like to see an increase in student attendance to student government related events.

“We don’t have the participation of the student body that we used to have; not just school spirit, but wanting to go to events and wanting to participate in things in general,” Turner said.

Fox agrees with Turner, and her main goal is to increase overall school spirit in the student body. Although Fox has never advised a student government class, she is excited to share her ideas and learn more about how to implement them.

“I would like to see [student government] more involved and doing more activities with the kids,” Fox said.

Along with general school spirit, Fox hopes to make small improvements to the rallies to make them more engaging for the audience.

“I’d like us to be more engaged and to highlight more kids on campus and hopefully make [the rallies] more exciting,” Fox explained.

Fox also wants to focus on making student government more diverse and inclusive of kids that may not be currently represented. She wants to start reaching out to kids and encouraging them to join the class based on leadership potential. Fox stresses that student government is already doing great, and only hopes to build on that to make it even better.

Fox will officially be the new student government advisor starting the fall of the 2025-2026 school year. Members of student government are excited to see what Fox will bring to the table. For information on how to join the class, see current student government advisor Turner in room 40.
