On Jan. 28th, El Camino students advertised their clubs in the back quad for the second time this school year. The purpose of club rush is to give students a chance to learn about and to join a club. The clubs that participated this block include YA Reads, the Latinos Unidos, Women’s Resource club and many more. There are also many class clubs, such as Band, KYDS, and Avid. The clubs can meet before school, during lunch, or after school.

To create a club, students have to ask a staff member to be their advisor. Club advisors provide a space for the club to meet, and they offer guidance on the activities that they may be trying to participate in. The advisors may also work closely with the club’s president to handle club affairs.

Michael DiSalvo is the advisor for the Theatre club, which meets during lunch on Wednesdays. The club had a table at club rush, and DiSalvo described their experience as successful.

“I give them a fair amount of autonomy—my room becomes the meeting place during lunch, and I try to be around for helping with ideas,” DiSalvo said.

DiSalvo also explained that students who are in the club usually participate in the shows that they put on.

Students sign up for clubs at Spring Club Rush. This year, some clubs offered snacks to get students interested.

The Princeton Review explains that clubs have many benefits for high school students. They can create a sense of community, which is important especially to underclassmen who are trying to find their way in a new environment. Clubs can also teach students responsibility by having them complete tasks that aren’t school related voluntarily. This is important for all students to help them learn self discipline. Clubs also make students more competitive on college applications, by showing that they are well rounded and good at managing their time.

This is the last time club rush will happen this year, but some clubs will still be accepting members. To learn more, visit the El Camino website, and look under ‘activities.’ Students can also look on Instagram to find out about club fundraisers and events.
