On Jan. 24, the El Camino boys varsity basketball team played against the Woodland Wolves at home. The game went into overtime and ended with a score of 68-69, with EC only losing by one point. The team agrees that with greater offensive execution and a tighter defense, a win would’ve been easy.
Both teams were esentially neck-and-neck the entire game, and energy was kept high in both the players and spectators.
The game began with a technical foul, called on EC Small Forward Trey Turner (‘26) for dunking during warmpus and violating the rule that states that players cannot touch the rim prior to the game starting. This gave Woodland the initial advantage, which EC fought back against with fast-paced plays and a firm defense.
Guard Mitchell Stevenson (‘25) explained that it was tough dealing with a one-point loss against a team they should’ve been able to beat.
“I feel like we could have played better defensively and if we made more shots, we would have won the game,” Stevenson said.
Turner agreed, adding that the team lacked in overall execution.
“We need to be strong with the ball and not turn the ball over,” Turner explained.

Point Guard Tolu Olotu (‘26) believes that they did well throughout most of the game, but lost energy towards the end which allowed Woodland to gain the lead. Going forward, he hopes that the boys can be more confident when going into a game and work to stay in shape so they can keep fighting until the very end.
Despite the eventual loss, there were many exciting moments for EC, including a dunk from Turner mid-game.
“I want to be able to dunk every game, whenever I have the opportunity–this was my first time [dunking] at home,” Turner said.
Although the season has not been ideal, the team is proud of each other and are keeping spirits high going into these next couple of games. To support the boys basketball team, come out to their last home game next Friday, Feb. 7 against Casa Roble.
