This year, on Nov. 20, El Camino students and staff gathered in the band room to participate in Open Mic Night to sing karaoke and have a good time together.
One student, JJ Doolittle (‘25), participated in this event and got the crowd dancing with his song, “American Pie”.
Doolittle is a very involved student at EC, being in advanced band, jazz band, and his individual band, “The Sac Seven.” Although he is not in choir, he has a passion for performing.
“I love performing,” he said. “My favorite part is bringing my passion to others and showing them that passion. A big part of it is putting a smile on their faces.”
Overall, he believes that the Visual and Performing Arts department is a good way to bring the student body together and get them to step outside of their comfort zone.
This event has been carried on for four years, taking place biannually; once in the fall and once in the spring before break. It’s seen as a way for students to have fun together before Thanksgiving and Spring break. Many appreciate the opportunity to perform for their peers and look forward to joining.
“It brought together the entire El Camino community,” Doolittle said. “There were people from within the VAPA department and from within just the school community, and from a personal standpoint, I know I had a great time.”
Tessa Kelly, the choir director, ran this event and believed it was a great success. She viewed this event as a way for students to express their talent and feel accepted.
“I think this is a really good opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and do something that isn’t choir, whether you’re singing with a bunch of people, it’s a solo song or maybe a duet,” said Kelly. “It ends up being really really fun, and the whole crowd is really supportive.”
Many believe that this activity is a good way to connect students, families and staff because everyone is supporting one another. Sasha Ferris (‘26) a student in the choir program, mentioned that appreciates the opportunity to participate in this event, sharing similar opinions as others.
“I think it brings people closer, because we’re all doing something that’s a little scary,” said Ferris.
Overall, many students and staff appreciate this event and enjoy connecting with the eagle family. To participate this spring, sign up sheets are in the hallways and it takes place in the M4, music room.
