Every block El Camino high school holds a Back to School night for parents and guardians to learn about their child’s classes. This block, Back to School night was held on Aug. 28 in the evening. On Aug. 30 students and staff had a minimum day because Back to School night was held that week.
At the beginning of the event, parents listened to staff members explain general information about the school such as the tardy policy and the dress code. Then, parents were dismissed to visit their child’s classes for 15 minutes each.
Back to School night is important for parents to attend so they can help their children succeed in high school. Teachers can offer tutoring hours or extra study materials that students and parents should be aware of.
Vice Principal Meghan Wilson helped plan Back to School night, and she attended to make sure everything was running smoothly. Wilson offered her opinion on the importance of this event.
“I think it’s an important thing for the parents who come so they understand the expectations of the teachers in the classroom,” Wilson explained.
Wilson also spoke about how it’s nice for a parent to know who their child is spending their time with. She also commented on how she noticed an attendance difference between lowerclassmen and upperclassmen.
This event is also important for teachers at EC. History teacher Robert Waldo explained his role in Back to School night.
“I talked with the parents about the subject of my class—and I took some questions from parents,” Waldo said.
Waldo believed the event was a success and noticed a lot more freshmen parents.
Along with teachers and other staff members, members of Student Government attended Back to School night. Junior class Treasurer Emmerson Leslie (‘26) spoke about her job at the event.
“I stood in the hallways making sure parents know where their classes are—we also pressed shirts to sell,” Leslie said.
Leslie went on to talk about how it is essential for some parents to attend to help their children, but not all parents need to go.
Back to School night is a requirement for teachers per their contract, and there will be a second Back to School night at the beginning of block 2. To find out more, visit the El Camino website.
