On Monday April 8, El Camino Juniors and Seniors took the California Science Test to give information to teachers, students and their families about what the students know about the subject.
While the school states this testing is required, many EC Seniors didn’t show up for the testing and had their parents or guardians opt them out of it.
According to the Vice Principal Secretary, Jane Smith, as of April 10, 23% of the senior class did not take the CAST test, but only 12 have officially opted out of the testing.
Tori Norlie (24’) explains her reasoning behind not taking the CAST.
“When they do these tests they should not make us go to school after because it’s so unmotivating… [also] no colleges obtain this information and is only beneficial to the high school, so it doesn’t benefit the students.” Norlie said.
According to caaspp.org, the CAST is an online assessment based on the “California Next Generation Science Standards” that covers three science domains; earth and space sciences, life sciences, and physical sciences. The test takes around two hours and consists of 110 multiple choice questions.
California School Dashboard records EC’s and all other schools’ results on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress exam (CAASPP) and CAST results. It automatically records student group averages and the performance levels that students have demonstrated on the exams.
