The art classes at El Camino held a Fall into Winter art show in the small gym on December 7th to display EC student’s artwork.
The art show is held in the small gym twice a year, once in the winter and again in the spring to showcase artwork from both blocks of visual art classes. Many of the pieces are in various mediums, such as cardboard, colored pencil, graphite and ceramic pieces.
The art could have been put on sale for an amount chosen by the artist. All of the money collected was donated to the art department for more supplies and better quality materials. There were pieces that were just for display because some students did not want their art to be sold.
The art show ended with a vote for the best pieces. Students that attended observed the art pieces and wrote down the name of the student they believed did the best work, and those votes were counted. This decided the winners and honorable mentions for the art show.
The first place winner of the show was Gisselle Escobedo-Martell (‘27) with her piece, ‘Lost in Paradise’. Escobedo-Martell’s artwork was the most popular piece in the show which resulted in her first place title. She explained how she had never won an art competition and seeing that her piece got lots of attention surprised her. She mentioned how her friends saw her artwork and thought it was created by someone else while others had just seen it for the first time during the event.
“For some other people that saw my drawing they probably haven’t seen it in black and white so it was cool to see how they reacted.” Escobedo-Martell said.
Payton West (‘24) was the second place winner with her self portrait she created in her AP drawing and painting class. She mentioned how she had no idea that people would like it so much and how she is proud to have it make second place among all the other artworks. Her piece featured different things that interested her and that were a part of her life, all created in a unified and unique artwork. West explained her idea behind the concept.
“I’m not a fan of drawing my own face, so I really wanted to do something that would capture who I am without actually drawing me.” West said.
Third place winner Molly Van Vorst (‘27) created a piece inspired by The Killing Joke which featured The Joker and was one of the favorites in the show. It was favored by so many students that she’s selling prints of it now. Van Vorst explained what her favorite part of creating the artwork on canvas was.
“Probably choosing the composition, [because] it took a while to figure out how I wanted him to look and what I wanted the joker to be doing—I think the sketching and figuring it out was the most fun.” Van Vorst said.
The art show wouldn’t have happened without the help of all of the visual art teachers that encouraged their students to showcase their talent and set up the art gallery-like feel in the small gym. Drawing and painting teacher for Beginning, Advanced, and AP classes Amanda Mc Donald shares her thoughts about how the art show went. She stated that the art show was a success in her eyes and everything was organized which made things a lot easier for her during the showcase.
“Everybody had hopefully a good time and got to see good work and get some ideas from other students’ work.” Mc Donald said.
The next art showcase will be held in the spring of 2024. If you’d like to see more of the visual arts here at EC before the next art show, visit classes A-7, A-8, S-7, and S-8 to see the talented students work in their classrooms.
