El Camino Boys Varsity Football took the loss against the Foothill Mustangs for their first home game last Friday, Sept. 1. The Eagles, led by Head Coach Brian Welsh and Team Captains Angel Figueroa (‘24), Mattias Woern (‘24), Winston Huber (‘24) and Josh Fallin (‘24) fell to the Mustangs by a score of 24-14.

Even without a win, Welsh was proud of the fight the Eagles put up, coming back from a 16-0 deficit after halftime.

“It was a rough start in the beginning, but we really fought back hard in the second half,” Welsh stated.

The team captains, including Figueroa, noticed low morale among the players and worked to bring them together as a team and build confidence.

“We worked during halftime to develop a plan, and we came through,” Figureoa explained.

The third quarter featured key plays from Noah Marez (‘25), including an effective toss sweep.

Welsh explained his desire to integrate this play into the game, as well as his confidence in his players ability to drive the ball downfield.

“We ran this play many times in practice. It’s fundamental, and we couldn’t quite get it,” Welsh explained. “We finally were able to run it in a game, and it worked out.”

The Eagles take on the Kennedy Cougars tonight at El Camino’s Abbott Field. Welsh and players are confident that they can learn from their mistakes and hope to strike early in the upcoming game. Tickets can be purchased at GoFan.com.
