Principal Evelyn Welborn and Student Government made changes to the rally rules at El Camino for the first back to school neon rally on Sep 1. Students from EC hope for an increase in student spirit.
Student Government Rally Chair Aubree Diacon (‘24) worked daily to make sure these rallies are a success. To make it an even bigger success, she called upon the entire school to bring the rallies to life.
“We need the student body to show up and come alive for the rallies,” Diacon stated.
The rally began with the traditional senior walk-in, and included many games and performances. Link Crew took on freshman representatives in an attempt to get half a cookie from their forehead into their mouth; the freshmen took the win. The team captains of all fall sports played a basketball game, during which each captain had to dribble a ball around 6 cones and make a lay up or free throw. Football Captain Sean Bee (‘24) scored and won. The game that created the most excitement from the crowd was an on-land water polo game between teachers and students, with the teachers beating the students 24-14. The rally also featured performances from EC Cheer, Band and Choir.

For the upcoming rallies, students can expect new changes, consisting of reducing the number of blackout rallies to one for the entire year, and limiting exclusive groups to one performance per year.
Welborn has made these changes to the student government rally planning so everyone watching can see something new, and can also see what is happening on the ground.
“As a viewer of rallies, even on the ground, I can’t see what’s happening when it’s dark, so imagine the kids that sit all the way in the back,” Welborn stated.
She hopes that with the lights on, students can become more focused, in the moment and can enjoy their time by participating with everyone else involved. Welborn is also looking to include as many different groups as possible in each rally.
“This will limit the amount of repetitiveness to the rallies,” Welborn explains.
She hopes that new performances that have never before been seen can elevate the student spirit with each rally. Welborn, along with the Principal Advisory Council, are always looking at new ways to include more students and staff members into the rallies.
Students can look forward to the upcoming Homecoming Rally on Oct 6.
