The morning of Aug 11, El Camino seniors gathered on the EC football field to watch the sunrise and celebrate the beginning of their last year of high school.
Starting at 6:15 a.m. and ending at 7 a.m., seniors arrived with blankets and spent the next 45 minutes taking pictures and enjoying the sunrise with their friends.
Associated Student Body President Carolina Carruth (‘24) explained the promotion process.
“We set [a date] last year but in terms of advertising, we don’t start until the last couple weeks of summer,” Carruth said.
Instead of putting up posters, Student Government used social media to advertise the event, and had Principal Evelyn Welborn send out an email to all the seniors.
Student Government Advisor Sara Turner and Senior Class Advisor Kyle Keller supervised the event, although the seniors still had freedom to spend their time as they wished.
Senior Class President Addison Ponder (‘24) and her classmates used this opportunity to relax and prepare for the upcoming year.
“Everybody just takes pictures. A bunch of us made these little signs that you could hold up and there was a big poster,” Ponder explained.
With an hour and a half remaining before school started, most seniors left campus with their friends to get breakfast after the event had ended.
At the end of the year Student Government will hold Senior Sunset, which is similar to Senior Sunrise but takes place in the evening and is held in celebration of the conclusion of the seniors’ last year of high school.
